A grain harvest to remember – August 2018

‘Plenty of dust, that’s what we like to see!’ – one of lads remarked to me as we were flat out in the middle of our grain harvest.  While the rest of the country was languishing in record high temperatures and drought, we were finally enjoying a harvest that was dry – cutting our wheat, oats and barley at very low moisture.  Despite the drought, our yields were very healthy, our winter crops of wheat and barley did particularly well.  There has also been unprecedented demand for straw from local farmers and the mushroom industry.

Dry weather like this automatically lifts the mood because it’s so much easier to get the work done.  It gives you great satisfaction to see the combine harvester cutting away and the baler working right behind it.  It’s days like these that you really enjoy your work.
