Growing Our Potatoes

Planting of potatoes starts in April. They are grown in a bed or drill. This is a machinery intensive process where field preparations start with:

  • Ploughing
  • Ridging Beds
  • Tilling
  • Destoning
  • Planting / Fertilizer Application

Potatoes need sunshine and water. Some summers it is necessary to irrigate the crop.

Blight is the main disease in potatoes and was the cause of the famine in 1845. This can be prevented and cured by fungicide applications. Timing and weather is critical in disease control.

Harvesting takes place from September to November. Potatoes are harvested into boxes and hauled back to farm where they are labelled for traceability and placed in refrigerated stores at 2 – 3 degrees celsius for up to 10 months.

All our potatoes can be traced from field to fork.
