Sustainability – September 2018

We are constantly looking at ways to improve our sustainability.  We work closely with our agronomist to ensure that our soils are managed productively and responsibly.

In recent years, with the introduction of both the ORIGIN GREEN and GLAS initiatives we have turned our attention to include biodiversity.  We have worked with local beekeepers – giving them space on our farm for their hives close to our oilseed rape.  This is of mutual benefit to us, in terms of pollination, and to the beekeeper, for a plentiful supply of honey and to sustain the native Irish honey bee.

As farmers we are also mindful of the habitats that share our land.  In the last year we have been busy planting hedgerows, cultivating cover crops for wild gamebirds and acting as guardians for the natural woodlands that form part of the farm and include many native deciduous trees and plants.

It’s a constant work in progress and for the coming year we have set a target to look at our energy efficiency levels and the possibility of introducing renewable energy into our system.
